Immediate danger for Greece and Cyprus

According to most media outlets, the White House announced that Trump will decide whether to strike Iran in two weeks. Even if we overlook whether it makes any sense to take seriously a President who says everything and its opposite within a matter of hours, there is a critical detail that most outlets missed. Trump did not say he would decide in two weeks, but within two weeks. https://www.politico.com/news/2025/06/19/trump-to-make-a-decision-on-iran-within-two-weeks-00414441.

Yesterday, America’s most reputable and celebrated journalist for decades, Seymour Hersh, wrote an article (https://seymourhersh.substack.com/p/what-i-have-been-told-is-coming-in?utm_campaign=posts-open-in-app&triedRedirect=true), citing American and Israeli officials, stating that the United States is ready to proceed with an attack on Iran, possibly even this weekend, because they want to avoid coinciding with the opening of markets on Monday. One of the reasons the strike has been delayed until now is that they wanted to take protective measures against potential Iranian retaliatory strikes on U.S. forces stationed at two dozen air and naval bases in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean.

In simple terms, the Americans fear that Iranian missiles may “visit” various locations, among which are certainly Cyprus and Crete. Hence, Mitsotakis’ statements that Patriots would not be sent to Crete—only to retract them a few hours later—and the rushed consultations in in the Greek Pentagon (Ministry of Defense) following the orders from the U.S. Pentagon. Ultimately, tonight, the Patriots are being transported to Crete.

Unfortunately, these dangers do not only arise from the general international situation but are also a direct result of the policies of Athens and Nicosia, which—with the tolerance of the “opposition”—have filled Greece and Cyprus with bases and entangled both states multiple times in potential nuclear conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. Not only have they supported NATO, but they have also identified themselves with Netanyahu on one hand, while continuously sending hostile signals toward Moscow on the other. Because of this policy, Greece and Cyprus have not only been nullified geopolitically, politically, diplomatically, and defensively, but they now also risk suffering missile strikes.

The government and judiciary have shredded long ago the Greek Constitution. However, it is worth remembering that the Greek Constitution, the UN Charter, and all International Law prohibit the use of American bases against a third country unless there is a relevant UN Security Council resolution. The use of American bases in an illegal attack against Iran violates both Greek and international law. Normally, Athens should prohibit it, not only for reasons of legality but also for self-defense and Greece’s national security reasons.

Of course, we cannot be certain whether or when these events will occur, and we hope they never do. But what we are certain of is that the danger is great and immediate. The situation around Iran is worsening by the hour. The U.S. Pentagon argues that tactical nuclear weapons are needed against Iran (https://www.defenddemocracy.press/pentagon-agency-believes-us-needs-to-drop-a-nuke-to-destroy-irans-fordow-nuclear-plant/). The Kremlin’s spokesperson warned that any use of nuclear weapons against Iran would have catastrophic consequences (https://www.defenddemocracy.press/us-use-of-nuclear-weapons-in-iran-would-lead-to-catastrophic-developments-kremlin/), while other Russian officials warn of the risk of a new Chernobyl if the Busher nuclear plant is struck https://www.defenddemocracy.press/towards-a-chernobyl-in-the-middle-east/. We explained in a previous article why Israel has already started a “low-intensity” nuclear war (https://www.defenddemocracy.press/civil-war-in-america-over-iran-and-the-danger-of-a-new-and-nuclear-august-4-1914/).
