The ecological destruction suffered by the well-known for its uniqueness Forest of Dadia in Evros and the shelter of protected birds, is irreversible as the flora of the area consisted of a rare combination of old trees and Special Relief, which most likely will never manage to regenerate.
Despite the ability of the natural environment to show life again from the ashes, in the case of the Dadia – Lefkimi – Soufli Forest National Park, the experts ‘ assessments are ominous, portending catastrophic consequences for birds nesting on the tops of trees and for the entire forest ecosystem. Professor and chairman of the Department of Forestry and natural environment of the Salonica University Alexandros Dimitrakopoulos analyzes in Τhesstoday.gr (https://thesstoday.gr/%ce%b1%
The picture that presents after the devastating fires the once unique forest of Dadia is disheartening and especially when you consider that it is a protected area. “Last year in June and this year in August, we managed to destroy it,” he said. “Nature restores itself and needs its time. Burnt pine forests and broadleaf shrublands in Greece take from 10 to 30 years to regenerate. However, Dadia will never regenerate, since the black pines were very old trees and on their tops many predators made their nests, it takes more than 150-and if – they make it.” The refuge was of immense environmental value, as “it was unique in the Balkans, in Europe and in the world. It had the ideal environment of vegetation, topography and relief and was very convenient for predators for this and it was a protected area,” explains Mr. Dimitrakopoulos.
