The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela categorically rejects the recent designation imposed by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the United States against President Gustavo Petro Urrego, his family members, and other officials of the Government of Colombia, as illegal, illegitimate and neocolonial actions that violate International Law and the Charter of the United Nations.
To this false accusation, the Colombian president responded on his social network X “Indeed, Bernie Moreno’s threat was fulfilled,” referring to the statements of the Republican senator, who on Fox News pointed out that the Latin American head of state was elected with the support of drug cartels, which motivated the Donald Trump government to consider his inclusion on the list.
For his part, Petro highlighted the irony of the measure: “Fighting drug trafficking for decades and effectively brings me this measure from the government of society that we help so much to stop their cocaine consumption.”

Faced with this scenario, President Petro announced that he will initiate a judicial defense in the United States, with lawyers from that country, to respond to the slanders launched against him by senior U.S. officials. He will be represented in his defense by U.S. attorney Dany Kovalik
The legal action represents a strong response to recent accusations and threats, such as those made by former President Donald Trump.
These accusations against the Colombian head of state come amid escalating tensions between Bogota and Washington over the war on drugs declared by the Trump administration, which has perpetrated eight attacks and caused the death of around 30 people in the Caribbean Sea and the eastern Pacific.
