German communists call for peace in Ukraine and an end to arms sales

German communists called for a negotiations to bring about a peaceful resolution to war in Ukraine and an end to a dangerous arms buildup.

“The danger of a major war, a nuclear war with Europe as a nuclear battlefield, is greater than ever. It has increased further with the escalation of the war in Ukraine.

“The intensified arms buildup by US-led Nato, the EU and Germany must be stopped,” the German Communist Party (DKP) declared in a statement today.

“In this country, this means increasing pressure on the German government with the demands: “No arms exports to Ukraine, no special funds of €100 billion for the Bundeswehr.”

The party statement was issued following the conclusion of its 24th congress over the weekend.

The communists said that the war in Ukraine did not start in February and could only end through a negotiated peace that recognises the breakaway “people’s republics” of Donetsk and Lugansk and gives guarantees on Ukrainian neutrality.

“The war in Ukraine must be ended as soon as possible. This war has already cost thousands of lives. Soldiers and civilians have been killed.

“The destruction is immense, millions are on the run. Our sympathy is with the victims and their families. We stand in solidarity with all refugees and with Russians who are facing increasing attacks,” the party said.

The DKP called for Germany to withdraw from Nato and for the immediate removal of all US nuclear weapons based in the country
