Trump’s Iran move increases danger of war, says Sigmar Gabriel

If the U.S. terminates the Iran nuclear deal or reimposes sanctions, it could result in Tehran developing nuclear weapons and increase the likelihood of war close to Europe, Germany’s foreign minister warned Saturday.

“My big concern is that what is happening in Iran, or with Iran from the U.S. perspective, will not remain an Iranian issue but many others in the world will consider whether they themselves should acquire nuclear weapons too, given that such agreements are being destroyed,” Sigmar Gabriel told a German radio station, Reuters reported.

His concerns are widely shared by EU diplomats who are afraid of a nuclear escalation in the region.

U.S. President Donald Trump sent a “difficult and dangerous signal” when dealing with North Korea, Gabriel also said.

Trump on Friday dealt a blow to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal by refusing to formally certify that Tehran is complying with the accord even though international inspectors say it is.

Trump threw the issue to Congress, which has 60 days to decide whether to reinstate sanctions. He warned that if “we are not able to reach a solution working with Congress and our allies, then the agreement will be terminated.”

The leaders of Germany, France and the U.K. immediately issued a joint statement in which they declared that they are committed to the Iran deal and its full implementation. They urged Trump and Congress to consider the security implications of their actions.

The Iran nuclear agreement was brokered by what the EU calls the E3+3 — the U.K., France and Germany, along with the United States, Russia and China. The group is also known as the P5+1, referring to the permanent members of the Security Council, plus Germany. The Security Council endorsed the deal in a unanimous resolution.

Gabriel also said that if the United States terminated the deal or if sanctions were reimposed on Tehran, it would give Iranian hardliners, who are against negotiations with the West, the upper hand.

“Then they might revert to developing nuclear weapons,” Gabriel said, adding Israel would not tolerate that and “then we will be back where we were 10, 12 years ago with the danger of war relatively close to Europe.”

The EU’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, said Friday that the U.S. had no right to unilaterally terminate the Iran nuclear accord. The bloc is united behind it, diplomats said, and EU foreign ministers will discuss at a summit on Monday how to react to Trump’s move.
