Former President of Bolivia Evo Morales thanked Wednesday United States Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders who reiterated his rejection of the violent coup against the legitimate government of the Indigenous leader.

“The U.S. Democratic leader, Bernie Sanders, defends us and says: ‘I do not like military coups.’ We appreciate your statements and we agree: coups interrupt democracy and cause great suffering to the people,” Morales wrote in his Twitter account.

The Democratic front-runner for the presidency of the U.S. expressed in an interview with U.S channel MSNBC his rejection for the actions of the Bolivian right-wing that forged a coup against Morales, after the elections of Oct. 20.

Asked about his support for the leader of Movement toward Socialism, Sanders emphatically said he doesn’t’ “like military coups.”

Morales now a political refugee in Argentina left Bolivia after receiving an army ultimatum on Nov. 10. This was followed by a right-wing orchestrated coup against the president ignoring the results of the Oct. 20 elections that gave MAS a win. A de facto government took over supported by the U.S., which soon followed violent repression of civilian protesters by the armed forces and police.
