Europe is arming Turkey against two EU members: Greece and Cyprus

Turkiye’s $7.2 Billion Eurofighter Deal Could Include One Weapon Greece Dreads Most – Storm Shadow

If Turkiye really bought Eurofighter with not just long-range Meteor but also Storm Shadow, it’s more than unpleasant for Greece

Turkiye’s long-awaited firm deal with the United Kingdom to purchase 20 Eurofighter Typhoon fighters continues to cause controversy due to, in any case, the insane price.

Initially, the British government announced £8 billion $10.7 billion, then BAE System clarified that it’s only about £5.4 billion – $7.2 billion. But even this amount raised questions, because $360 million per Eurofighter, even in a comprehensive contract, is too much.

At the same time, Turkish publication SavunmaSanayiST provides the following explanation for such pricing. In particular, it emphasizes that the price of $10.7 billion announced by the British government is the total benefit that this contract can create in the ecosystem of the UK’s defense-industrial complex.

But $7.2 billion is the cost of 20 Eurofighter Typhoon fighters in the latest Tranche 5 version, together with weapons and additional pods.

This primarily concerns Meteor missiles, and there will supposedly be significantly more of them than Greece ordered together with Rafale, and from what’s known, the contract included only 36 missiles for 24 French fighters. It also includes other air-to-air missiles (most likely ASRAAM), as well as, according to the publication, one more very important missile.

Defense Express can make a confident assumption that such important armament for the Eurofighter can only mean the Storm Shadow cruise missile. And although Turkiye has its own air-launched cruise missile SOM, it’s twice as light as the European cruise missile. The 620 kg SOM has a range of 250-275 km and a 230 kg warhead, versus 550 km and a 450 kg warhead in the 1,300 kg Storm Shadow.

That’s why Turkiye’s acquisition of this European cruise missile could become a very unpleasant surprise for Greece, which in the 2000s also purchased these missiles in quantities of about 90 units. Moreover, Athens is already not thrilled about the prospect of its neighbor being strengthened with these fighters equipped with long-range Meteor air combat missiles.

In this case, as with Meteor, if the information is confirmed, Athens should be expected to put even more pressure on European countries to block the sale of this armament. Because ultimately, both Meteor and Storm Shadow are missiles from the MBDA conglomerate, which is only partially (37.5%) owned by BAE Systems.

And Athens has already aggressively warned against selling Meteor to Turkiye and threatened that the Turks could supposedly reverse-engineer the missile to improve their own Gökhan missile. Therefore, the Greeks will definitely react very violently to the threat of seeing Storm Shadow under the wings of Turkish Eurofighters and will put even more pressure on Paris.

Because it’s the French who control the sale of MBDA missiles. And Ankara and London will really need to persuade Paris. The French not only have a stake in this association thanks to Airbus, which owns 37.5% of MBDA (and 10.8% of Airbus is directly owned by the French government), but MBDA’s headquarters is in a Paris suburb.

At the same time, it’s worth noting that there’s also another interpretation of the Eurofighter price for Turkiye from another Turkish source. According to an alternative view, of the $7.2 billion for 20 Eurofighter Typhoon fighters, $6.13 billion is allocated for the aircraft themselves, while $1 billion is for armament.
