The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (People’s Liberation Front), the main party in Sri Lanka’s ruling National People’s Power coalition, has strongly condemned the US military intervention on Saturday (3) in the independent sovereign state of Venezuela, and abduction of president Nicolas Maduro, elected by popular vote, and his wife.
In a social media post in Sinhalese the statement from the JVP on Sunday (4) said, as in any free and independent country the people of Venezuela hold the supreme right to decide on their own future, and who their rulers will be, adding that other powers have no right to usurp that right.
Democracy, human rights and the freedom and independence of states are principles accepted the world over, it said. Military aggression or invasion that undermines them cannot be justified on any grounds. “We of the JVP condemn this military invasion carried out against Venezuela by the United States of America and stand for the independence and sovereignty of Venezuela,” the statement said.
Meanwhile Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism issued a ‘Statement on Situation in Venezuela’ saying the government is “deeply concerned about the recent developments in Venezuela and is closely monitoring the situation.”
It said “Sri Lanka emphasizes the need to respect principles of international law and the UN Charter, such as the prohibition of the use of force, non-intervention, peaceful settlement of international disputes and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. Sri Lanka attaches great importance to the safety and well-being of the people of Venezuela and the stability of the region and calls on all parties to prioritize peaceful resolution through de-escalation and dialogue. At this crucial juncture, it is important that the United Nations and its organs such as the UN Security Council be seized of the matter and work towards a peaceful resolution taking into consideration the safety, well-being and the sovereign rights of the Venezuelan people.”
It is notable that the foreign ministry statement nowhere mentions or condemns the United States’ military assault on Venezuela, or the abduction of its president and his wife, that have created the present crisis faced by its people.
