Ukraine received Patriot system from Israel

The Patriot system provides long-range interception of both ballistic and cruise missiles

Ukraine received a US-made Patriot air defence system from Israel a month ago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday.

“The Israeli (Patriot) system is operating in Ukraine. It has been operating for a month. We will receive two Patriot systems in the fall,” Zelenskyy told journalists during a briefing, Ukrainian media reported.

Back in May, The New York Times reported that one of the Patriot systems previously based in Israel would be transferred to Ukraine after modernization. Analysts noted that with this “Israeli system” and another one from Germany or Greece, Ukraine could soon operate around ten Patriot batteries in total.

In June Israel’s ambassador to Ukraine Michael Brodsky confirmed that the systems which once defended Israel’s skies were now deployed to protect Ukrainian cities.

Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans announced in August his country will deliver the first package of US-made weapons, including Patriot missiles, to Ukraine.

“The Netherlands will deliver a €500 million package of US weapon systems (incl. Patriot parts and missiles),” Brekelmans wrote on social media, adding that it will be the “first NATO ally” to do so.

Under an agreement reached in July, several European countries committed to sending US-made weapons from their existing stockpiles to Ukraine and pledged to replenish them with the same systems. Under the new deal European allies cover the cost.

Ukraine is now assembling a layered shield that combines Germany’s IRIS-T and Gepard systems, France and Italy’s jointly developed SAMP/T air defence system and the US-made Patriot batteries.
