Erdogan’s Election Win Gives Him Vastly Expanded Powers in Turkey

Turkey — Turkish voters gave President Recep Tayyip Erdogan a decisive victory in national elections on Sunday, lengthening his 15-year grip on power and granting him vastly expanded authority over the legislature and judiciary.
The election was the first to be held since Turkish voters narrowly approved a referendum last year to give the president — once a largely ceremonial role — sweeping executive powers. Mr. Erdogan will also have a pliant Parliament, with his conservative party and its allies having won about 53 percent of the vote in legislative elections on Sunday.

More than 56 million people were eligible to vote in Sunday’s twin presidential and parliamentary polls, held for the first time on the same day.

Erdoğan re-elected president, ‘People’s Alliance’ wins majority at parliament

Initial results from Turkey’s presidential election showed incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdoğan with a commanding lead, paving the way him to govern under a new constitution which grants the president new powers. His ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) failed to win majority of the 600 parliamentary seats, while the “People’s Alliance,” formed by the AKP and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), was projected to win 342 seats.

Turkey’s main opposition attacked the state-run media on Sunday for its coverage of parliamentary and presidential elections, saying it was attempting to manipulate the public’s perception of the polls.
Preliminary results from state-run news agency Anadolu showed President Tayyip Erdogan had received 57.02 percent of the vote in the presidential race, with 40 percent of the votes counted.
