Kashmir: Palestine in the Making | Full Documentary

India and Israel are close allies, and Kashmiris say they recognise the same pattern from Palestine.

In 2023 we entered parts of Kashmir normally out of bounds to foreign journalists. In this documentary we show how Indian Kashmir has come to resemble a military occupation: soldiers on the streets, extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances and evictions.

The numbers show how lopsided it is. Government data reported in March 2025 counted 76 active militants in Jammu and Kashmir, down from 91 in 2024 and 135 in 2022. According to the Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society, a Kashmiri rights group, there are around 700,000 security personnel in the region. The Indian government publishes no total. On that estimate, that is more than 9,000 security personnel for every active militant.

In 2019 India revoked Article 370 and ended the autonomy of its only Muslim-majority state, now a union territory. New laws let non-Kashmiris buy property and apply for domicile for the first time. According to the J&K government, 83,742 domicile certificates went to non-locals in two years. Many Kashmiris fear a demographic change, like in occupied Palestine, and some voices in India point to Israel as a model.

India is also Israel’s largest arms customer. This documentary shows that Israeli weapons and methods of oppressing dissent have travelled from Palestine to Kashmir.

We follow families separated by the internal borders, tribal communities evicted from their land and victims of militarisation, to understand why Kashmir is a “Palestine in the making”.

Kashmir is not Palestine, and the film says so. But the people we filmed keep making the comparison.
