Greenlandic politician Tillie Martinussen warned that U.S. President Donald Trump’s ambition to acquire Greenland is a “big miscalculation,” saying the Arctic island has the means and international backing to protect its sovereignty.
Speaking in Nuuk, Martinussen said Greenland would not be persuaded by money and stressed the importance of free healthcare, education and self-rule. She added that Western allies, including France and Canada, have stepped up in support of Greenland’s rights.
Trump has repeatedly said the United States needs to take control of Greenland for security reasons, warning that rivals like Russia or China could otherwise gain influence. Denmark has firmly rejected any proposal to sell the territory, reaffirming its sovereignty amid rising tensions between Washington and Europe.
