Greek police detained fifteen members of the left party Nea Aristera (New Left) after they unfurled a Palestinian flag at the Acropolis on Wednesday morning.
Among those taken into custody were members of the party’s youth group. Following their detainment, the party issued a statement criticizing the law enforcement officers for showing “special zeal in carrying out their duties.”
The protesters can be heard chanting “Free Palestine” and “Stop the Genocide.”
The statements spoke of genocide in Palestine, accusing the Greek government and PM Mitsotakis of “supporting the war criminal Netanyahu” by remaining silent and tolerating his actions.
“The peace movement and the urgent need for a ceasefire are growing both internationally and within our country,” the statement read.
“Solidarity and the demand to end the war are not criminal acts. It is the right and duty of all citizens to demonstrate for peace. Palestine must live; the Palestinians are not alone. We demand the immediate release of those detained.”
The general secretary of the central committee of Nea Aristera, Gabriel Sakellaridis, posted on social media, “Members of the New Left and its youth group were taken to the Athens Police Headquarters (GADA) after being detained for raising the Palestinian flag at the Acropolis. Repression will not prevail. Full solidarity with the martyred Palestinian people.”
