OPEKEPE: Parliament Committee approve lifting of immunity of 11 ND MPs

The members of the Committee on Ethics of the Greek Parliament have unanimously recommended the lifting of parliamentary immunity for the 11 sitting Members of Parliament of New Democracy whose names are included in a case file referred to the Hellenic Parliament by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The case file concerns the well-known OPEKEPE scandal and the fraud distribution of EU agricultural funds fake beneficiaries and the alleged involvement of ND lawmakers and ministers to favorite payments to their voters and parts of their constituencies.

During the committee’s session on Tuesday, April 7, two of the 11 MPs – former ministers Kostas Tsiaras and Notis Mitarachi – provided explanations in person, while the remaining members submitted written memoranda requesting the lifting of their parliamentary immunity in order “for the truth to come to light.”

Τhe final decision will be taken by the plenary of the parliament by roll call vote after Easter.

The alleged involvement of New Democracy lawmakers and ministers has put immense pressure on Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis who has the absolute majority in the Parliament with 156 seats, however, now he sees that a dozens of his lawmakers are suspected of criminal actions.

All opposition parties urgently call on Mitsotakis to go to early elections and speak of “widespread corruption in the government.”

According to media information, the European Prosecutor’s Office is about to submit one more case file regarding the alleged involvement of two former ND ministers into the OPEKEPE scandal.
