How do I know that Israel is planning to use nukes? Let’s look at the options for ending the current impasse between Iran, the US and Israel.
Option 1. Iran and the US negotiate their way out. In order for this to happen, Iran will have to agree to rid itself of its 400 kg of 60% enriched uranium AND to end its uranium enrichment program (except possibly to 3.5%) AND to give up its huge stock of hypersonic and ballistic missiles and drones AND to dissolve its alliances with and support for its allies in Yemen, Palestine, Iraq, Lebanon and (to a minor extent) Syria. Would Iran really agree to voluntarily make itself defenseless and force itself to do whatever the US tells it? Not a chance.
Alternatively, perhaps the US backs off from its demands. But even in the unlikely event that Trump would agree, Netanyahu will not. So no chance of that, either. Is there any point in considering the possibility that Trump will defy Netanyahu? Didn’t think so.
Option 2. US/Israel invade Iran. In this case, Iran has promised that it will hit back with its considerable arsenal, at US naval vessels, US regional bases, and economic assets in the region, including petroleum producing facilities in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE. It will also strike and sink tankers in and around the Persian Gulf, and block the narrow Strait of Hormuz at the entrance to the Gulf, shutting down 30% of world petroleum production, and causing a massive global economic disaster. Finally, Iran will destroy Israel’s military and economic assets to a far greater extent than it did last June, when Israel asked for (and got) a ceasefire because it was running out of defensive missiles (which are not yet fully restocked). Israel would be devastated.
3. So why is Israel pushing so hard for war? Israel definitely wants Iran destroyed, wiped off the map, broken into little pieces. As I previously stated, it is the only major remaining obstacle to Israeli domination of the entire region, after destroying Iraq, Libya and Syria. But in order for the plan to work, not only must Iran be destroyed, but Israel must not! How can that be accomplished? The only way is for Israel to use its nuclear arsenal as early as possible in the war, to destroy Iran’s missiles before they are used, as much as possible. This means more than a few nuclear weapons, because the missiles are kept in different locations, and because Israel would have to allow for some of their nukes not reaching their targets.
Nuclear war is obviously the most dangerous type of war that could take place, with potential participation by other nuclear powers. But Netanyahu may believe that the risk is manageable because Israel is not perceived as a threat to any nuclear powers. And he is counting on the US taking care of Israel’s economic needs in the war’s aftermath. Certainly, Israel will be widely condemned and probably ostracized. But Netanyahu and his supporters likely believe that this is another major step in fulfilling the Zionist vision, and that with time, Israel will be stronger than ever.
I wish I could see another alternative, but it worries me that I don’t.
