In solidarity with the Palestinian people in the town of Agios Nikolaos in Crete (Greece), local residents and organizations held a protest at the town’s port in response to what they described as a recent “heinous crime” in Gaza, where hungry Palestinians were allegedly killed by Israeli soldiers during a UN food distribution.
Tensions arose during the peaceful march to the port where a cruise ship carrying Israeli tourists was docked. Some Israeli tourists allegedly made offensive comments and gestures towards the demonstrators, leading to heightened emotions among the demonstrators.
Some of the passengers on the cruise ship allegedly made threatening gestures towards the assembled people, including children. Coast Guard men immediately intervened, averting the tension. The demonstrators shouted slogans in support of the Palestinian people and left peacefully.
The demonstration was organised by citizens carrying Palestinian flags and was part of a wider wave of solidarity actions across Greece, including in Athens and other cities, condemning the ongoing violence in Gaza
