Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei claimed on Wednesday that Iran was striking only US military targets in the region and doing so with precision.

In an interview with Al Arabiya, he said: “We are only defending ourselves and are not attacking neighboring countries,” adding that Tehran is targeting sites attacking Iran. His remarks came despite videos circulating in the Gulf appearing to show Iranian strikes hitting civilian areas.

He also added: “We extend a hand of friendship to all countries in the region,” stressing that claims Iran has attacked Saudi Arabia are merely accusations.

Baghaei went on to say that Iran had been subjected to an illegal attack by the United States and Israel, adding: “This war was imposed on us and we did not start it.”

He also said Iran is keen to maintain collective security in the region.

‘Washington derailed the negotiations’

The Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson also explained that all Iranian institutions are operating in accordance with the law, noting that internal affairs are proceeding well.

He also confirmed that a temporary leadership council is currently managing the country’s affairs.

Regarding negotiations with Washington, Baghaei said that talks had been progressing well before the war, indicating that Washington was the party that derailed them.

When asked whether there are currently any negotiations with Washington, the Iranian spokesperson replied: “Right now we are focused on defense.”
