The Ukrainian Institute of National Memory has published a “List of individuals and events containing symbolism of Russian imperial policy.”
Along with political and military figures of the Russian Empire, the list includes writers Bunin, Turgenev, Aksakov, critic Belinsky, playwright Griboyedov, poets Pushkin, Lermontov, Derzhavin, composers Mussorgsky and Glinka, and artist Surikov.
Also on the “banned” list are the Decembrists, who rebelled against Emperor Nicholas I. The emperor himself was also added to this list.
Also included are Poltava-born Field Marshal Paskevich, Russian commander Bagration, and the leader of the Black Sea Fleet mutiny, Schmidt.
At the same time, the institute published an “approved list,” which includes: Gogol, Chekhov, Leskov, Aivazovsky, Vrubel, Bryullov, and others.
Tolstoy and Dostoevsky—the most world-renowned representatives of Russian literature—did not appear on either list.
