The GSF, a convoy of over 40 ships with hundreds of activists on board was heading towards Gaza to break the Israeli siege and deliver much needed humanitarian aid to its starving citizens.
Protests broke out in various countries in Asia on Thursday, October 2, following the Israeli attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) on Wednesday and the abduction of hundreds of activists.
The GSF, consisting of over 40 ships with hundreds of activists onboard, was heading towards the besieged Palestinian territory of Gaza in order to break the Israeli siege and deliver crucial humanitarian aid to its people forced to starve by Israel.
The ships were attacked by the Israeli forces on the night of October 1, an attack which continued until October 3, when they were scores of miles away from the Gaza coast. Israeli forces abducted the activists and seized the aid the ships were carrying for the people of Gaza.
The Israeli action is a violation of international humanitarian law and the fundamental rights of the individuals abducted. It also constitutes a war crime, several commentators underlined.
The International Committee to Break the Siege announced on Friday that several activists abducted by Israel have started an indefinite hunger strike against their abduction.
Protests have erupted in cities across the world to reject Israel’s attacks on Gaza and on the Global Sumud Flotilla. People have demanded the immediate release of the activists and an end to Israel’s genocidal blockade and attacks on Gaza. Activists and movements across Asia have joined the wave of protests, in some cases to demand that their fellow comrades and compatriots be released.

Arab grassroots decry Israel’s flagrant overseas “piracy” against Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters
by Aseel Saleh
October 03, 2025
Western countries have been blamed for encouraging Israel to go too far with its crimes by not taking the necessary measures to deter it after its two-year genocide in Gaza.
Day after day, Israel grows more and more audacious in its quest to impose its hegemony not only over the West Asia region, but also over the entire world, violating land, air, and international waters alike.
Hundreds of peaceful international activists aboard over 40 civilian vessels were subjected to a brutal act of piracy on the high seas, just 75 miles away from the Gaza coast. Their boats were loaded with life-saving humanitarian aid for the forcibly-starved two-million-person population in the Gaza Strip.
The activists were kidnapped and the ships were forcibly steered towards Israeli ports. Few governments took any action to prevent the mass abduction from happening. The interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla is a grave crime, which revealed that many Western countries are indifferent to the lives of their citizens when the offender is Israel.

Latin America condemns interception of Global Sumud Flotilla and detention of activists by Israel
by Pablo Meriguet

People and presidents across Latin America and the Caribbean spoke out against Israel’s illegal interception of over 40 vessels en route to Gaza to break the blockade and deliver humanitarian aid.
As soon as night fell on October 1, Israel began its extensive operation to intercept the over 40 vessels that make up the Global Sumud Flotilla. Around 500 volunteers from over 40 countries were participating in the mission bound for Gaza which sought to break Israel’s illegal blockade and deliver vital aid to the inhabitants of Gaza. The operation, which continued into dawn on October 2, has been widely condemned as a blatant violation of international law.
Amongst the 500 international volunteers currently being held in Israel detention, many hail from Latin America and the Caribbean. Various governments in the region have called for respectful and humane treatment of their fellow citizens at the hands of Israeli authorities.
When news of their capture broke and images began to circulate from the Mediterranean Sea, where heavily armed Israeli military forces were seen boarding humanitarian aid ships, spontaneous demonstrations erupted in cities across the region.
Colombia
One of the most active leaders in opposing Israeli actions in Gaza is Colombia’s Gustavo Petro, who ordered immediate action to be taken against what he considered an “international crime”. “Two Colombian citizens who were engaged in activities of humanist solidarity with Palestine have been detained in international waters. The Foreign Ministry must make all the necessary demands, including in the Israeli courts. I invite international lawyers to join our lawyers in serving Colombia. The free trade agreement with Israel is to be terminated immediately. The entire Israeli diplomatic delegation in Colombia is to leave.”
