A senior Iranian official claimed that explosive materials had been planted inside containers either in the country of origin of the goods or along the transportation routes, leading to the explosion that killed 36. He added that blasts occurred simultaneously at four different sites. However, security camera footage showed that prior to one of the explosions, there had been a fire outbreak in a container at the port, which, according to authorities, contained hazardous chemicals.

A series of powerful explosions rocked Shahid Rajaee Port in southern Iran on Saturday. According to Iranian media reports, 36 people were killed and approximately 516 others were injured. Footage from the scene showed flames and thick black smoke billowing over the port’s structures.

Although Iranian authorities said they would wait before issuing an official statement regarding the explosions, Iranian parliament member Mohammad Saraj openly accused Israel on Sunday.

According to Saraj, explosive materials were either inserted into the containers at their country of origin or during their transport. “We are not ruling out the possibility that internal elements within the country were involved in planting the explosives at Shahid Rajaee Port. There is clear evidence indicating Israeli involvement,” he said.

12 die in Iran arms blast at Cyprus naval base

Jul 11, 2011

Huge blasts in a seized Iranian arms cache at a Greek Cypriot naval base in southern Cyprus killed at least 12 people yesterday, triggering power and water outages at the height of summer.

The early morning explosions devastated the adjacent Vassiliko power station in what Commerce Minister Antonis Paschalides called a “tragedy of Biblical dimensions” for the small Mediterranean island.

The plant produces almost 60% of the country’s electricity supply.

Massive damage was caused to homes in the nearby village of Mari, forcing the evacuation of its 150 residents, the village headman told AFP.

Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said 62 people were injured, two of them seriously, and announced three days of official mourning.

Defence Minister Costas Papacostas and Greek Cypriot National Guard commander Petros Tsaliklides resigned at an emergency cabinet meeting, Stefanou said.
