Is Greece Becoming a New Ukraine?

By Dimitris Belantis | Sep. 8, 2026

A number of analysts, former diplomats, former military officers and others have recently been suggesting that Turkey and Israel will engage in a military confrontation in the southeastern Mediterranean in the immediate future, most probably involving Cyprus as well.

Today, I also heard Mr. Ayfantis claim in a video that Greece’s direct involvement in such a conflict would represent our Great Geopolitical Opportunity: to liberate the Turkish-occupied territories of Cyprus, or at least to create a more favourable negotiating position for Greece and Cyprus on the Cyprus issue. In other words, to get our revenge for 1974—with Israel’s weapons and assistance.

Such arguments are entirely devoid of logic and, should they have a direct influence on our country’s foreign policy, are extremely dangerous. They amount to an appeal for Greece and Cyprus to become directly involved militarily in the power struggle between Turkey and Israel as regional powers. Indirectly, but unmistakably, they also entail involvement in the major US-Iran war.

A country like Greece, which is on the verge of social disintegration, is being urged to add the wounds of a war whose duration we cannot predict and whose tragic consequences we cannot even begin to assess. We are also being invited to become Israel’s military franchise, having already become its commercial and tourism franchise, as well as a destination for Israeli property ownership and the beginnings of settlement projects, and so on and so forth.

On what grounds do we take it for granted that, despite their serious regional rivalry, Turkey and Israel are supposedly bound to go to war? Are they not governing Syria together, albeit amid disagreements?

On what grounds do we assume that, if Greece supports Israel’s dangerous policies, Israel will reciprocate by helping us? Has it ever done so for others in the past? Or will the Republic of Cyprus be completely dismantled and Greece itself mutilated for Israel’s sake?

Have we completely lost our minds? Have we gone utterly mad? A military involvement of this kind would, with a high degree of probability, lead to a new Asia Minor Catastrophe and deliver the final blow to the modern Greek state. Whoever emerges victorious will turn our country into its protectorate. The Greeks will become the next Ukrainians—or, worse still, the next Palestinians.

Is the formal transformation of our country into a protectorate, half Turkish and half Israeli, a patriotic policy? Has this genocidal state now become our “homeland”?

This does not mean that we should accept the demands and terms of Turkish expansionism. However, the notion that, in order to avoid being reduced in size by Turkey, we must raise the Israeli flag over Athens is the surest recipe for Hell.
