On centenary of Mussolini’s rise, Italy’s president warns against resurgent fascism

Italy’s president, marking the 100th anniversary of one of the attacks that helped bring dictator Benito Mussolini to power, on Thursday encouraged Italians to reinvigorate their country’s democracy as a bulwark against fascism.
Italian President Sergio Mattarella was commemorating the trashing and torching by fascist thugs of a farm cooperative building in the northeastern city of Ravenna 100 years ago. The violent attack was one in a series launched by fascist supporters of the dictator, whose iron rule would last into World War II.

Politico reveals Draghi’s downfall was decided at a ‘secret dinner’ in a Roman villa

On a hot afternoon in the shade of a luxury villa in one of Rome’s most opulent areas, some of Italy’s most powerful politicians gathered for a swordfish and salad dinner and plotted to overthrow Mario Draghi’s government, Politico reports, revealing the background to the fall of the outgoing one prime minister.
Guests at the Villa Grande on July 19, 2022 were the tycoon, former prime minister and leader of the center-right Forza Italia, Silvio Berlusconi, and he was accompanied by the leader of the far-right Lega, Matteo Salvini, with representatives of the Lega from other groups and their advisors. They took instructions over the phone from the leader of the far-right post-fascist Brotherhood of Italy party, Giorgia Meloni, the country’s most popular politician who, according to recent polls, is set to lead Italy’s next government in early September.

Italian Fascists support war on Russia

ROME (Reuters) – Italy will keep sending arms to Ukraine and back Kyiv in its war against Russia if the conservative bloc wins a forthcoming national election, the head of the most popular party in the alliance has said.
The far-right Brothers of Italy, led by Giorgia Meloni, has been one of the few Italian parties that has wholeheartedly endorsed Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s decision to ship weapons to Ukraine, even though it was in opposition to his government.
By contrast, Meloni’s two main allies, the League and Forza Italia, which were both in Draghi’s coalition, have been much more ambivalent, reflecting their historically close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
