WKCR News Coverage: CUAD Students Occupying Columbia

Wednesday, April 17, 2024 – 4:43am to Tuesday, April 30, 2024 – 11:59pm

BREAKING NEWS: At around 4am this morning, students on campus occupied the East Lawn outside of Butler Library, with approximately 50 tents and banners reading “Liberated Zone” and “Gaza Solidarity.” WKCR is currently covering these events on Columbia’s campus. Regularly scheduled programming will be intermittently preempted by these developments as they progress. This is a developing story. Tune in at 89.9 FM or WKCR.org.

The spirit of WKCR lies in our storied history, not only as an outlet for alternative music programming but also as a journalistic institution with a focus on the voices of the students on our campus and the issues that affect them directly. It is in that spirit that WKCR covered the protests on Columbia’s campus in 1968, and as recently as the Student Workers’ Union strike in 2021. Quite simply, WKCR FM has access to a perspective that is often overlooked by most media outlets. Our coverage today is a continuation of the last several months of programming about events on campus in the wake of recent and very public facing tensions in the Columbia community. We hope and urge you to keep your ear to this unique perspective and stay tuned for breaking news and updates.
