Volos: Mother sentenced for stealing milk for her baby

Α young mother was caught stealing milk from supermarkets in Volos, central Greece. The 30-year-old woman told police that she had no money to feed her baby and she was forced to steal to ensure the baby’s survival.

She was sentenced to 20 days prison, with 3 years suspension.

Within a period of five days, the woman carried out three thefts in large supermarket chains, local media reported.

When she was caught she had only milk and fabric softeners in her bags.

Admitting the thefts, she told the judge on Thursday that it was poverty that led her to theft and that she was forced to steal to ensure the survival of her child.

She was found guilty of aggravated theft and the Single-Member Misdemeanor Court of Volos sentenced her to 20 days in prison with a three-year suspension.

There is no information on whether the mother was advised to receive any help by the social services of the municipality or some charity.
