Rodriguez on Zionist role in Maduro’s abduction

Speaking in a televised address, Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodriguez claimed that the capture of Nicolas Maduro by U.S. forces had shocked the world, and that the attack “undoubtedly has Zionist undertones. It is truly shameful.”

Sources in contact with local Jewish community leaders told Haaretz that they preferred to wait and see how the highly volatile situation on the ground played out before celebrating Maduro’s removal from office, noting that local Jewish community leaders were deeply troubled by Rodríguez’s claim.

Dina Siegel Vann, director of the Institute for Latino and Latin American Affairs at the American Jewish Committee, told Haaretz that Jewish community leaders reported that all Jewish institutions, including synagogues, had been ordered closed, Jews were instructed to remain at home and security around Jewish institutions was increased.

“The American attack in Venezuela raises concerns about the fate of its Jewish community, which numbers about 4,500 people and is mostly concentrated in the capital, Caracas. This community has shrunk significantly under Chavez and Maduro, but it is still strong, active and wealthy. Israel considers the community to be highly Zionist, and despite the community’s concerns about its fate in light of the U.S. attacks, Jerusalem expects its influence to grow with the ousting of the regime” – Liza Rozovsky
