Intervention by the Private Employees’ Union to the Prosecutor Regarding the Hooligan Attack by Israeli TouristsI
On Friday, members of the administration of the Private Employees’ Union of Rhodes intervened before the Prosecutor of the Rhodes First Instance Court regarding the hooligan attack by a group of Israeli tourists against a solidarity gathering for the Palestinian people on Thursday afternoon. The Union members met with the prosecutor and submitted a memorandum, requesting information on the progress of the investigation.
On Thursday evening, the unionists filed complaints with the 1st Dodecanese Police Directorate, demanding the arrest and punishment of those involved in the attack, while simultaneously denouncing the provocative tolerance of the Police, who were present at the scene of the assault.
It should be recalled that on Thursday afternoon, a group of approximately 20 Israeli tourists attacked a solidarity gathering in Cyprus Square, which included student associations and the Rhodes Peace Committee, condemning the criminal policies of Israel, the US, NATO, and the EU, and expressing solidarity with the peoples of Palestine and Lebanon.
The Israelis, emboldened by the stance of their government—which supports the crimes of the murderous state—and with the tolerance of the Police, launched an unprovoked attack after spotting Palestinian flags. They initially provoked the crowd, hurling vulgar insults and shouting slogans, before escalating to physical assaults, punching participants and issuing threats such as “We’ll slit your throats” and “We’ll kill you!”
The attempt to disperse the gathering failed. The group of Israelis was met with a decisive response from both the demonstrators and bystanders, who pushed them back.
However, the mechanisms of the bourgeois state exhibit characteristic inertia. As noted during the intervention at the Prosecutor’s Office, no legal proceedings have been initiated. “What investigation? What flagrante delicto?” was reportedly retorted during the intervention, as not even the complaint had reached the Prosecutor’s Office from the Police. The prosecutor stated that since the perpetrators were not arrested by the Police during the attack, little could be done afterward…
On Thursday evening, Thanasis Pafilis, the parliamentary spokesperson of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), had phoned the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, demanding the arrest and deportation of the Israeli tourists.
The KKE’s Regional Committee of the Southern Dodecanese condemned the provocation in a statement, emphasizing:
“Their audacity—to try to impose silence on the crimes of Israel, to believe they can suppress the justified outrage overflowing in this provocative manner—stems from the stance of the government and those who justify the slaughter in the name of Israel’s ‘self-defense.’ But they ‘hit a wall,’ because the gathering expressed the true sentiments of our people, who stand against the massacre carried out by the murderous state with the support of the US, NATO, and the EU.”
