Cyprus’ Foreign Ministry condemns the incidents against the Turkish Cypriot ‘Afrika’ newspaper

22-01-2018

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its grave concern with regard to the incidents that took place earlier today in occupied Nicosia against the Turkish Cypriot Afrika newspaper. This came about as a result of Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, inciting his “brothers and sisters” in the occupied part of Cyprus to “give the necessary response” to Afrika, which had criticized Turkey’s invasion in Syria.

This incitement to violence on the part of the Turkish President, is yet another proof of Mr. Erdogan’s policy to consolidate Turkey’s authoritarian policies in the turkish occupied part of Cyprus, including restrictions on freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

The Government of Cyprus unequivocally condemns the Turkish President’s statements, and their negative effects in occupied Cyprus. In this framework, it has already informed the United Nations and the Permanent Members of the UN Security Council of Turkey’s actions, requesting that all necessary steps be taken with a view to protecting journalists and the freedom of press and expression in the areas under Turkish military occupation.
