Armenia Recalls Ambassador From Israel Over Azeri Weapons Sales

Israel provides Azerbaijan with 60 percent of its weapons

Armenia announced on Thursday that it is recalling its ambassador from Israel due to Israeli arms sales to Azerbaijan, as fighting between Armenian forces and Azerbaijan continues in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

An Armenian foreign ministry spokeswoman said the ambassador was recalled in protest of “Israel’s supply of ultra-modern weapons to Azerbaijan.” Israel and Azerbaijan are major trading partners, and it is estimated that Israel provides Azerbaijan with 60 percent of its weapons.

Hikmet Hajiyev, the assistant to the president of Azerbaijan, told Israeli media on Wednesday that Azeri forces are using Israeli-made attack drones in Nagorno-Karabakh. Hajiyev said that the Azeris “very much appreciate the cooperation with Israel, especially the defense cooperation.”

Azeri cargo planes have been spotted landing at an Israel air force base this week. While this is a common occurrence due to the trade agreements between the two nations, the frequency and timing indicate the planes are replenishing the Azeri military’s weapons for the fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh.
